June 2024 · 4 minute read

Miley Cyrus is a well-known animal lover, but does the Hannah Montana alumnus ride horses, or own any?

Yes, Miley has been able to ride horseback ever since she was a child. She used to do it with her father most of the time. Miley even used to own a ranch until recently, and horses are among her many pets.

Read on to learn more about Miley’s love for animals in general and horses in particular.

Miley is an Animal Lover and Animal Rights Activist

Miley loves animals so much that she has been fully vegan since 2014, which was when her beloved dog died. Miley speaks out often in favor of veganism, and also for animal rights. She attempts to make the vegan lifestyle seem as accessible as possible – often sharing her thoughts on the subject with her millions of Instagram followers. When she announced her conversion to veganism in 2014, she said on Instagram, “So many good plants/fruits/ veggies to eat. You ain’t gotta eat dead animals!”

Miley has earned much recognition for her activism as well. Animal rights group PETA has gone so far as to call her “the Veganest Vegan to Ever Vegan”! Similarly, the Animal Rights National Conference has awarded her the ‘Celebrity Advocate Award,’ which is given out to celebrities that use their platform to speak out for the ethical treatment of animals.

Miley has released some vegan collections with the brand Converse in the past, to emphasize the importance of ethical fashion and to earn funds for her Happy Hippie Foundation; a charity meant to help LGBTQ+ youth. She once told Vanity Fair, “Choosing to live as a sustainable vegan activist means wearing more vintage (less waste; loving pieces for longer), playing with the newest eco-materials and technology, and making custom vegan pieces with some of my favorite designers.”

Miley Used to Own a Ranch

In 2014, the Hannah Montana alumnus bought a luxurious ranch just outside LA, which the LA Times described as a “6,500-square-foot ranch-style house” with “beamed ceilings, walls of French doors, wide-plank wood floors and pastoral views,” and also having a “550-vine vineyard and a swimming pool” as well as a “one-acre riding arena, two paddocks (and) a 10-stall barn.”

The property was well suited to keep as many horses as she pleased and had plenty of room for her to horseback ride in. the property reportedly cost a hefty $5 million! Miley Cyrus frequently rode horses when she was growing up; she did it with her father at his Nashville, Tennessee estate. She has also been seen riding her pet horse Blue Jeans as Hannah Montana in the show and movie of the same name.

However, Miley sold this ranch in 2018, for a price comparable to what she bought it for.

Does Miley Still Have a Horse?

As mentioned earlier, Miley still has some pet horses. Miley has many pets; other than her two horses and two mini horses, she also has seven dogs, a pig, and three cats. Miley shared these animals with Liam Hemsworth when they were still together. A vegan himself, Liam loved animals just as much as she did. In fact, he was the one who saved all these animals when their Malibu home burned during the Woolsey.

Miley has spoken about this, saying, “My partner, I call him my survival partner now. He thinks it’s not romantic, but I learned that it is. That is why you pair up with someone, for survival, and he was so incredible. He got all the animals out in his truck…He got a lot of action for saving the animals. Yeah, he got a lot of action. We had to make sure he knew I was very, very grateful.”Miley and Liam separated in 2019 after seven months of marriage, and soon filed for divorce citing “irreconcilable differences”. When the divorce was being finalized, they did not have a legal battle over who would keep the animals – the way that childless couples sometimes do when parting ways. TMZ reported that Liam did not contest the issue, even though he legally could have in California. He simply decided to let Miley keep them all.
