Teddy Edwards is an up and coming singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from New York City that has big plans for his journey through music. He’s got a debut single out now, he’s gearing up for the release of his EP, and he’s enjoying the process as it happens.
While he’s been writing music since he was young, his professional journey is just kicking up so we wanted to chat with him about his inspiration, what he hopes to do in the future, and how growing up in NYC was the perfect place to help set him up to achieve his dreams.
You were born and raised in NYC – what was it like growing up in the big city? Did it help cultivate your passion?
Yeah, I’ve been very lucky to grow up in a place as great as New York. Growing up in a city that is full of so much diversity, so many different people and experiences has impacted who I am today. Whether directly or indirectly, it has definitely affected my creativity and desire to pursue music.
‘My Name’ was your first official release but you’re already gearing up for the release of your EP as well. What was your favorite song to write?
That’s too tough! Each song has its own meaning and experience for me.
You’ve been called a multi-instrumentalist, can you tell us what you play? What instrument is your favorite?
I play piano, guitar, and I started picking up drums a year ago. I don’t have a favorite, but I would say that I write the majority of my songs on piano.
Is there a style of music you’ve not explored yet that you’d like to?
Well right now I’d say the style that I’m working on for my new album is Pop/R&B, but we’ll see where my direction goes in the future.
Everyone has a muse, what’s yours?
Making mistakes, learning, being honest, and living life. All my experiences influence what I write.
Where is the most unique place you’ve ever drawn inspiration from?
Whatever I know or experience is what I write about. I’ve met and known very unique people; they’ve definitely been good sources of inspiration.
What was the first piece of music you ever purchased?
Well, the first album I ever got was the Beatles #1 Album (with all their hits) and that definitely started things for me.
Who would you love to collaborate with?
Right now I’d love to collaborate with Miguel.
Tell us about the songwriting process for ‘My Name’.
“My Name” was created at a songwriters workshop for VocalizeU in Nashville 2014. I worked on it with a friend of mine from New York, Baum, and then we later rewrote the second verse before I recorded it in 2015.
What is your current favorite album?
I love Wildheart by Miguel.
How about a guilty pleasure song?
“Bitta” by Eskeerdo.
Tell your new fans 3 interesting things about you.
I used to play tennis competitively, I’m terrified of cockroaches, and I have a cute dog named Coop.
Do you have any shows or events coming up soon?
Right now I’m still trying to figure a lot of that out, but I’m hoping to be performing a lot after I release my album.
