Gwen Shamblin Lara was born on February 18, 1955, in Memphis, Tennessee. As a result, she grew up in a Christian household. She attended the University of Tennessee as well. She went on to earn her master’s degree at Memphis State University. She, her husband, Joe Lara, and five others were killed when their private plane crashed into a lake near Nashville.

As a result, the plane took off for the town’s International Airport. At the time, it collided with Percy Priest Lake in Smyrna, Tennessee. It was about 12 miles east of Nashville. Furthermore, she died on May 29, 2021, at the age of 66.

In the 1990s, she began hosting the show at Bellevue Baptist Church. The course was a 12-week course guided by video and audio CDs featuring Lara.

By 1994, the curriculum was available in approximately 600 congregations across 35 states. Furthermore, by July 1996, the initiative had grown to approximately 5,000 congregations. In December 1996, approximately 8 churches in the United Kingdom hosted workshops. In the United States, some participants hosted meetings in their homes.

In 1996, Weigh Down Workshop had grown to 40 employees. It also established an office in Franklin, Tennessee. By August 1998, the workshop had hosted over 21,000 classes, with over 250,000 people from all over the world attending. It’s worth noting that classes were held in all 50 states, as well as Canada and Europe. She was also chastised for identifying as a Christian.
