Kay Ivey is an American politician. A Republican, she has been Governor of Alabama, since April 10, 2017. She has also been Treasurer of Alabama, from January 20, 2003 to January 17, 2011, and Lieutenant Governor of Alabama, from January 17, 2011 to April 10, 2017.

Kay is the daughter of Barbara Elizabeth (Nettles) and Boadman Nettles Ivey. Her father worked with the Gees Bend community as part of the Farmers Home Administration. Her parents were second cousins through their great-grandparents Joseph Nettles and Ann Johnson, and were also more distant cousins through other Nettles ancestors.

She grew up working on her parents’ farm.

Kay’s paternal grandfather was Thomas Turner Ivey (the son of William Ivey and Martha Ophelia Nettles). Thomas was born in Alabama. William was the son of Turney Ivey and Caroline W. Ivey. Martha was the daughter of Joseph Nettles and Ann Johnson.

Kay’s paternal grandmother was Olive Burson (the daughter of Laura Finklea Nettles). Laura was the daughter of Samuel Henry Nettles and Martha Mary Owen.

Kay’s maternal grandfather was Earl Nettles (the son of Sgt. Thomas Alexander “T.A.” Nettles and Martha/Mattie Ann Robbins/Robins). Earl was born in Alabama. Thomas was the son of Joseph Nettles and Ann Johnson.

Kay’s maternal grandmother was Ethel DuBose Nettles (the daughter of Samuel DuBose “S.D.” Nettles and Theodora Hortence “Dora” Newberry). Ethel was born in Alabama. Samuel was the son of William Thames Nettles and Mary Margaret DuBose.
