He became the first fighter to defeat Igor Vovchanchyn (with his trademark head kick) in his eighth fight. As Vovchanchyn began to decline, Cro Cop took the title fight for the heavyweight division. Cro Cop defeated Dos Caras Jr. with a head kickKO in 46 seconds. He then promised the fans that he would be back against Fedor Emelianenko in the next fight for his title.

Filipovic, a martial arts enthusiast from his youth, began his professional career as a kickboxer in 1996. He followed in the footsteps of Branko Cikatic, his compatriot. Filipovic had an amateur record of 48-8 with 31 KO’s before turning pro. In his debut match, he defeated Jerome Le Banner. However, Ernesto Hoost lost his next match and he decided to return to boxing and law enforcement. As a three-time national champion in amateur boxing, he joined the Lucko Anti-Terrorist Unit and served there for six years before he was elected to Croatia’s Parliament. Filipovic was a participant in 1997 World Amateur Boxing Championships. He lost his first round match against Olympic medalist Alexei Lezin. He was a commando in Croatia’s anti-terrorist police unit Alpha, stationed in Lucko (near Zagreb). This earned him the nickname “Cro Cop”. His nickname was “Tigar”, which is Croatian for “tiger”. He fought many times in his early career.

After defeating Randleman, Cro Cop stated that he wished to fight former UFC Heavyweight Champion and PRIDE 2000 Grand Prix Champion Mark Coleman. In the pre-fight interviews, Coleman repeatedly stated that he was going to take Cro Cop down and pound him out, while Cro Cop said there’s no way he would be taken down and that he would defeat Coleman. At PRIDE 29, Cro Cop stuffed every single one of Coleman’s take down attempts, staggered Coleman with straight lefts before knocking him out at 3:40 of the first round.

Cro Cop’s first 6 professional MMA fights were in K-1 2001 GP Final, PRIDE FC and the New Year’s events Inoki-Bom-Ba-Ye. He defeated veterans Kazuyuki Fujita (twice) and Japanese legend Kazushi Sakuraba, while drawing with Nobuhiko Takada and reigning PRIDE Middleweight Champion Wanderlei Silva.

Mirko Filipovic was 19 when his father, Mirko Filipovic, died. Cro Cop had been a radio telegraphist in the Croatian Army the year before. His request to join the Croatian kickboxing team was granted after he wrote a request to his military commander. Filipovic was told by the colonel:
