Olly Alexander is feeling Dizzy

June 2024 · 3 minute read

Back in December, it was announced that singer, songwriter, actor and all round British icon Olly Alexander will be representing the UK at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

After much speculating, teasing and snippets emerging online, his rousing entry ‘Dizzy’ is finally here! Written by Olly and producer Danny L Harle, the synth-heavy track is an electrifying offering all about the intense and joyous emotion of falling head over heels for someone.

‘Dizzy’ comes accompanied by an equally head spinning music video directed by Colin Solal Cardo. Check it out below!

Speaking about the track, Olly said: “I wrote the song last summer with Danny L Harle, we started off with the word ‘Dizzy’ because it just popped into my head and I liked it. I was thinking about fun things that could make you dizzy and I remember saying “dizzy from your kisses” so the song is about feeling such an intense swell of emotion for someone they totally turn your world upside down and inside out.”

Taking inspiration from some of their favourite ’80s artists, Olly continued: “Danny and I believe music should transport you somewhere magical and we wanted to describe this magical place in the song; a place of beautiful gardens, eternal flowers and time turning endlessly in an ecstatic loop. We took the feeling of Dizziness and put that into the production, so there’s a lot of undulating arpeggios, lilting harmonies and counter rhythms in the backing vocals. We were inspired by a lot of music we love from the ’80s, like Erasure, Adamski and of course Pet Shop Boys.”

Olly has also sat down with Graham Norton to discuss ‘Dizzy’ and his journey to Eurovision. Check out a snippet below, or watch the entire interview on BBC iPlayer.

Olly Alexander is best known for being part of Years and Years, with whom he scored five top 10 UK singles, two number one albums and six Brit Award nominations. After stepping out on his own, the performer also ventured into the world of acting, taking the lead role in the acclaimed TV series It’s A Sin.

News of Olly representing the UK at Eurovision was first announced during the Strictly Come Dancing final last year, with much excitement surrounding the fact that an already well-known popstar will be flying the flag this year. He follows in the footsteps of Mae Muller, who represented the UK last year when the competition was held in Liverpool.

The 68th Eurovision Song Contest takes place in Malmö, Sweden this May following their victory in 2023 with Loreen’s ‘Tattoo’. The first semi-final takes place on Tuesday 7 May, with the second semi-final on Thursday 9 May before the highly anticipated grand final on Saturday 11 May.
